Ich habe das Schuljahr 03/04 in Lincoln, Nebraska verbracht!
I spent the 03/04 school year in Lincoln, Nebraska!

Ja wo liegt das denn überhaupt?
Where is Lincoln???

Am 18.8.03 habe ich Deutschland, von Stuttgart aus, mit dem Ziel Sioux Falls/SD verlassen. Über London und Chicago kam ich früh morgens (irgendwann nach Mitternacht) am 19.8.03 an meiner Destination Lincoln an.
Deutschland hatte ich verlassen, um in den USA ein bisschen Kultur zu schnuppern und die Sprache zu perfektionieren! So stand ich mit einem komischen Gefühl, 2 vollen Koffern und ein bisschen mehr in einem Land,das mir völlig fremd war, welches aber bald zu meiner neuen Heimat wurde!

I left Stuttgart/Germany on August 18th 03 with the destination Sioux Falls/SD. With stops in London and Chicago I finally arrived in Lincoln somewhen after midnight in the pretty early morning of August 19th 2003.
I left Germany to experience a little bit of the American culture and to make my English a better one. So it came that I stood in a strange country with 2 suitcases and a little bit more in my hands, but this weird feeling changed soon and it became my second home!

Hier erstmal ein paar kleine Informationen zu dem Staat, in dem ich 11 Monate meines Lebens verbracht habe!

Here first some information about that state in which I stayed 11 month of my life.

Nebraska, der Begriff, stammt von der Sprache der Sioux Indianer und bedeutet so viel wie "flaches und/oder breites Wasser", welches auf den Fluß Platte bezogen ist, der sich von Westen nach Osten durch den Bundesstaat schlängelt. Außerdem ist Nebraska auch als Cornhusker State (Cornhusker = Maisenthülser) bekannt, gerade wegen der großen Zahl des Maisanbaus.
Nebraska wurde am 1. März 1867 als 37. Bundesstaat in die Union der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika aufgenommen. Mit einer Flächengröße von 200 358 km² und einer Einwohnerzahl von 1,739,291 Einwohnern steht Nebraska an 16. Stelle in der Rangfolge der gößten Bundestaaten der USA.

Nebraska, the name, cmes form the language of the Sioux Indians and means "flate or wide river". This name is because of the Platte River which flows from West to East through Nebraska. The state is also known as The Cornhusker State, because there is a lot of corn cultivation.
Nebraska became a member of the Union, called United States of America, on March 1st, 1867, as 37th state. It has a size of 77,353.7 square miles and a population of 1,739,291 total. With those numbers is Nebraska ranked the 16th biggest state of the USA.

Das Staatslied/The State's Song:
"Beautiful Nebraska" ("Schönes Nebraska")

Nebraska liegt ziemlich zentral in der Mitte der USA und gehört daher zum Tornado *scared* gefährdeten Gebiet im Mittleren Westen. Es ist zählt zu den landwirtschaftlich ertragreichsten Gebiete der USA. Die Landschaft ist ziemlich flach oder leicht hügelig und meist von großen Feldern und Anbaugebieten überzogen. Außerdem gibt es im nördlichen Gebiet eine Steppen ähnliche Landschaft mit Sandbergen, genannt "The Sandhills". Es gibt ettlich viele Farmen oder Ranchen dort, so kann ich erwähnen, dass der Vater meines Hostdads ebenfalls Farmer ist und meine Gastoma ein Rancher. Der Unterschied zwischen Rancher und Farmer liegt darin, dass ein Rancher hauptsächlich die Viehzucht betreibt und ein Farmer hauptsächlich vom Ackerbau lebt.
Aber ich werde ja nicht direkt auf dem Land wohnen, sonder im nördlichen Teil von Lincoln, der 2. größte Stadt in Nebraska.
Nebraska liegt in insgesamt 2 Zeitzonen, im Osten gilt die Central Standart Time (das sind -7 Stunden der Deutschen Zeit) und im Westen gilt die Mountain Standart Time (das sind -8 Stunden der Deutschen Zeit), es gibt auch eine Sommerzeitumstellung wie in Deutschland.
Hier möchte ich euch ein paar Bilder zeigen von der Stadt, von der ich überwältigt bin. Für mich war es total großartig in eine so mega City zukommen, da ich hier ja praktisch in einem kleinen 2000 Einwohner Ort auf dem Land lebe.

Nebraska is quite in the middle of the USA and is one of the states with tornado dangers in the mid west. It is one of the agricultural profitabelest parts of the USA. The landscape is very flat or with light hills and most parts are coverd with fields and areas under cultivations. But there is a part in the Northern State, which is called "The Sandhills" because its landscaped is shaped mostly out of the sandy hills and high grass. There are a lot of farms or ranches, so I can tell you that the father of my host dad is also a farmer and my host granny is a rancher.
There are 2 time zones in Nebraska, in the East there is the Central Standart Time (GMT -6 hours, MEZ -7 hours) and in the West there is the Mountain Standart Time (GMT -7 hours, MEZ -8 hours), they also change their times during the summer.
I won´t live directly on the country side. I will live in the north of Lincoln, the 2nd largest city in Nebraska.
Here I would like to show you some pictures of the city, which I am overwhelmed with. For me it was really great to go to such a big city. Because I am coming from a small village with 2000 people.
